Mindful Transformation-Honoring Ancestry and Ritual

Ritual, Ancestry & Sacred Transformation as Part of Your GLP-1 Journey

Transformation isn’t just about the body. It’s about creating sacred space for mind, body, and spirit to align — guided by ritual, ancestry, and presence.

My introduction to Patrice Malidoma Somé came through his book, Of Water & Spirit. His story wasn’t just intellectually deep — it was the kind of depth that feels like sitting around a fire, listening to your uncle or grandfather share stories of ancestors while children run and play nearby. I couldn’t help but imagine that I, too, had a story like that — but mine was buried in the consciousness of the many who came before me.

Somé highlights African shamanic traditions, community rituals, ancestral wisdom, and spiritual initiation. He spoke about family and interconnectedness without ever having to explicitly say it — much like we describe our relationships today when we shrug and say, “It’s complicated.” His stories show how ritual, daily practice, and connection to ancestry can enhance personal transformation. In both Of Water & Spirit and his book Ritual, he examines the structure common to all ritual and demonstrates how the absence of ritual in the Western world contributes to the unraveling of society’s fabric.

When I began my GLP-1 journey, I realized transformation wasn’t just about my body. It was about creating a container for change — a sacred space where mind, body, and spirit could align. Patrice Malidoma’s teachings on ritual and ancestral connection gave me a roadmap for building that space.

He reminds us that ritual is a bridge between intention and embodiment. Lighting a candle before a GLP-1 shot, journaling for a few quiet minutes, or pausing mindfully before nourishing my body — these small practices anchor me in the present while connecting me to the wisdom of those who came before. I realized that transformation is as much about honoring lineage and energy as it is about physical outcomes.

With his guidance, subtle shifts began to appear: my relationship with food became calmer, the anxiety that once shadowed my daily choices softened, and the pause before an injection transformed into a reflective, sacred moment rather than one of dread. Rituals informed by ancestral wisdom allowed me to claim my agency and infuse each action with purpose.

Somé also emphasizes that community amplifies personal transformation. Even in quiet moments alone, I feel supported by collective energy — a reminder that alignment is never a solo endeavor. His teachings reframed GLP-1 for me: not just as a tool for physical change, but as a catalyst for deeper self-awareness, presence, and mindful practice. Now I know you may be thinking, come on Tonua. But NO. We are Mind Body & Spirit and just maybe the spirit that we have been given is not ours to hold.

Every healing act, Somé reminded me, is sacred. To expand that sacred awareness into a living, energetic practice, I also turned to Michael Beckwith, whose spiritual teachings bridge action, vibration, and divine flow — helping me bring ritual, intention, and embodiment into every part of my life, including in my GLP-1 journey.
